## What’s Mastodon?

If you’ve never heard of this before, think of it like free, decentralized Twitter.

The Mastodon website gives a nice introduction. Their teaser:

> Social networking that’s not for sale.

>

> Your home feed should be filled with what matters to you most, not what a corporation thinks you should see. Radically different social media, back in the hands of the people.

## Why floe?

A floe "is a large pack of floating ice". We leave speculations about an analogy to this service as an exercise for the reader.

## Who is behind this?

This service is run by me as a private person. I care about the environment and try to use technology for a positive impact on society. Feel free to reach out via Mastodon or e-mail. In particular, if you’d like to contribute to this as well, it would be great to hear from you.

Our server runs on renewable energy in Germany.

## How is this funded?

So far I have been paying all costs out of my own pocket. However, in order to ensure the continued operation and to make necessary upgrades, I would appreciate donations.

## Is my data safe?

I take the security of your data seriously and I am doing my best to follow industry best practices.

Backups are made daily and stored encrypted at a remote site, making it possible to recover from server failure. You can also, at any time, download your own data from Mastodon, and it is possible to move your account to a different instance later on.

There are at the moment two admins with access to the server, so if one is unavailable in a server emergency, the other can try to fix things.
